We ran for a long, long time with over 400 tapes assigned to a 3583-L72.
Yes, it is an administration headache, but it works (and is much

When TSM requests a mount from overflow, what command do you use to
insert it back into the library?
See Admin Guide topic Managing a Full Library.

Been there, done that.
- Advantage of building your own pool is that you can expand it whenever
you want just by adding disk.
CDL's on the market mostly have an upper limit on the TB they support.
- You'll need to pre-allocate the volumes
your own pool, you'll need to plan on doing your compression on the client end.

That's what we are doing. Our primary is a 6.4 TB VTL.
So far, it's working very well. Excellent performance.
Main concern is if the device fails, how long will it
take to restore all

I could use an external drive rack, build a RAID array, and use
it to replace my primary tapepool, correct? What would be the
disadvantages of that vs. a VTL?
The RAID array would be more difficult to use as an initialdestination for
LAN-free
main disadvantage is Fragmentation

Our IBM 3583 tape lib is out of space.
What do you think of this idea?
Acquire disk-based appliance i.e. 3 TB. Use it for primary. Use 3583 for
off site tapes only.
Please advise.

Yes, we are keeping offsite tapes offsite in the manner you described.
The addition of an AIX box ate up all available space.
How many slots are there for tapes in your 3583 library? If it's less
than 60, you can

So, you ejected primary tape pool tapes from the library to make space.
How do you know which tapes you can eject? (The reclaimation process
uses those tapes.) What are the steps?
