My concern is more operational. I figured it would work, but if problems
ever came up would it rally be necessary to have a base.

They'll work just fine without a sitemonitor.
Early syncinjectors ran standalone. They each had non-microcontroller
based timing hardware in them, and adding sitemonitor control added a fair

We run several sites without a site monitor and just monitor the sync input
status on the aps...

I see the advantages but I'm trying to avoid putting any unnecessary gear
in the box that's going to be up on the tower.

How else will you monitor your DC voltages and be able to power cycle your
radios if you don't have a Base unit?
You can also monitor temperatures in your enclosure with one.
