grid mode doesn't it? The reason I like dmenu is it is lightweight and
doesn't have a ton of dependencies though

running daedalus, which is bookworm minus systemd.(*1) For
nearly everything audio-related I use only ALSA, avoiding
pulseaudio, piperwire. These are huge projects.

I'm using debian bookworm for now and the upgrade from bullseye broke all
audio multimedia packages. Having installed deb.multimedia.org's bookworm
packages results are no better.
The mpv package also failed with a strange runtime error I've never found

I find lightdm with lightdm-slick-greeter to be about the best display
manager option. You should be able to start orca using alt+super+s from
the display manager's window.
Fenrir is probably the most comprehensive fully userspace screen reader
for text mode TTYs and terminals, meaning that
If it uses Mate terminal, the .bash_profile doesn't get read by
default. You could put them in .bashrc and it should read them when the
terminal is opened. I think .bashrc is read every time a shell is
invoked, so that is something to be aware of.
