From what I understand. Smooth scrolling either turns the page into a low
resolution image or reduces the rendering quality while you scroll. If you
do it on an android handset you will notice this too.
I presume it is done to reduce the juddering when scrolling on a low
specification machine.

A spreadsheet package would be ideal, multiple sheets in a workbook so you
have your tables. Can be distributed as ods,xls,csv...

a cheap mp3 player which supports voice recording
would be ideal. They just dump the recording to the SD card as a wav
or mp3 or whatever.
