patches to add ALSA directly into a Linux 2.4.x kernel will be revived.
For quite some time now the patches in
ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/kernel-patches have been 2.5.x only. I

Well on newer machines which don't have analog cd output I'm not
sure if you can get playback with most cd players. I know xmms-cdread
has the ability to read the digital CD audio stream but I don't know
how many other players have the ability. Remember too that xmms itself

I'm not an expert, but this sounds like something out of a default asoundrc
that involves ttables. To me that means that you would need to use
LD_PRELOAD, etc. For what it's worth, anyway...
