But if I set the master volume and PCM volume to maximum value,
it is super loud.
I expect it should be as loud as in M$ windows.
Well if I disabled the +12dB boost in OSS driver,
I got the same volume as in M$ windows.

OSS uses diffrent way to control pcm volume as is used ALSA.
OSS sets AC97 PCM volume to 0 dB or +12 dB (boost) and volume is
controled by DSP code.
ALSA uses AC97 PCM volume. You have range from -34,5 dB to +12 dB.
If you want PCM volume from range -34,5 dB to 0 dB (this is without
bost) then
Hi,
I'd like to know how should I write the asoundrc in order to
record the audio stream that comes from an OSS application
writing in /dev/dsp to a file or equivalently to create a virtual
capture device from which an application can record. To be clear:
- OSS application A writes to /dev/dsp
I'm using Gentoo 1.4 and kernel 2.4.20 and kernel 2.4.22. I compiled alsa
driver, utils and pcm, versions n.ยบ0.9.2, but when i try to start emu10k1-
script, i get the following error:
1
SOUND_MIXER_PRIVATE3: You're probably using an older incompatible dirver:
Invalid argument
I still get
Don't use 0.9.2...
Emerge it like this: ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge alsa-driver
If you need to emerge the other alsa packages, also use the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS
argument... Alsa come a long way since 0.9.2 ...:p
Hope this helps :)

Hi all,
I'm quite new to ALSA architecture and tried to install sound for my VIA8233
southbridge, which is an ALC650 model. I tried different configurations and
always get the same problem. It can be described with different symptoms ...
whatever the kernel I use (2.4.22 with alsa 0.9.6 or 0.9.7,
Hi, I'm a new user in Linux. I'm using gigabyte
GA-81PE1000 Pro motherboard with Intel 865PE chipset
and Realtek AC97 soundcard. However, after I installed
alsa version 0.9.7a, I still can't open the sound.
When I type sndconfig, it can detect the soundcard
as Intel Crop. | 8280IEB AC'97. However,
Howdy. I gave up a little while back trying to get the M-Audio Audiophile USB
working under my Gentoo install because I needed audio badly and didn't have
the time to fight with it righ then. The OSS compatible USB audio driver
works just fine for playback so I took the easier route since I
I have an odd situation where the OSS emulation is working but the Alsa
interface isn't. I can run aumix but not alsamixer, play but not aplay.
Alsamixer says
failed to open mixer #0/#0: No such file or directory
Aplay says
unable to obtain longname: Sound protocol is not
* Is there a way to connect the front and rear volumes to one single

I change the Wave volume from XMMS for instance.
I didn't see an answer for this. I wonder if it is possible to use your
.asoundrc file to bind to
When I am using emu10k1 OSS driver,
I can edit /etc/emu10k1.conf to disable the front analog channels +12dB
boost.
Without doing this, the volume is too high and the sound quality is bad.
Is there any way to do this for ALSA driver?
QAmix has a button Mic Boost +20dB with my SBLive.

Ah, forget it. I had two copies of the alsa utilities and the first one
in the path
Untill alsa 0.9.6 , under X-mame i could hear no sound , and no
internet radio with bitstreams like 56 kbps etc . With alsa 0.9.7a , I can
hear sound in both situation playing but the quality is really bad , like
a broken radio . This is all using s/pdif , because analog sounds works
