The old app mentioned is actually a 2d rpg client, "gcfclient2".
When it was written, /dev/dsp was the thing to use.
On the BSDs I believe such is the case still. There /dev/dsp
does automatic mixing (like alsa).
Linux should be capable of the same thing, for cross compatability.
