I've been running it on Mandrake 9.1 for a while now. You were *almost*
there with your configure line. The key is to use --disable-verbose-printk
(instead of --enable-verbose-printk).

I have an Abit IS7 motherboard, which has the Intel 865PE / ICH5-R chipset
with the ALC650 CODEC onboard. I'm running Mandrake 9.1 with the
2.4.21-0.25mdk kernel. And I've downloaded and successfully installed ALSA
0.9.7a drivers, and 0.9.7 lib, oss, tools, utils.
Alas, all is not perfect -
