Out of tape really means out of tape. Appends are really unlikely, as AMANDA

So you've got this pool of tapes that amanda rotates through. Does amanda

If amanda doesn't keep track of this what strategies are prevalent for

I might have missed this in the FAQ-O-Matic.
I have a 20 tape rotation on which I do full backups each night(I'm
backing up about 10Gb on DDS3 tapes). I got this error this morning. It
looks to me that amanda isn't overwriting DailySet100 but appending it.

I thought I'd reply to my own e-mail, since I fixed the problem. "xfsdump"
assumes that "xfsdq" is in the path. "xfsdq" is in the path, but really
only the root user path. Since Amanda runs as a non-root user, even with a
setuid app, it inherits the regular user path. Therefore, if "xfsdq" is in

Do the dumpcycle and related variables mean anything when using tar instead of
dump? Specifically I'm looking at the tapecycle variable and wether or not it
means anything in the context of tar. (knowing that dump uses levels which
seem to be primed via the dumpcycle variable)

Hi Christoph,
I dont think so, but maybe. Its a just matter to do the test :)
and add the apropiate flags (find . -xdev -type f ...).
And hand editing has not to be a pain (using vi and ":%s/oldregexp/new/g"
commands)
It was just a quick approach. I didnt test.

you don't even need tar for this. If you have indexing turned on,
you have already a complete list of all files on all your tapes
in your index directorys.

Frank,
I think Joshua nailed it but your right, may be we can
squeeze a little more out of the hardware (looks like
we did pretty good though).
The drive is in fact a DLT 4000 on a SunOS 5.6 system (we
are in process of migrating to a new R280 with LTO drive
but that process is ongoing...).

Or also the "-t" flag to get a list in tape and find to get a list in
disk.
# amrestore /dev/tape host /disk
# tar -tvf host_disk.0 > /tmp/list_of_files_in_tape
# find /disk -exec ls -l {} \; -print > /tmp/list_of_files_in_disk
# diff /tmp/list_of_files*

Well, your taper line in the report says it wrote 19.9G to tape, and your
failed dump was trying to write 6.8G. How big are your tapes, and what is
your tapetype set to?

Joshua,
That would have been our interpretation except for one message
that we aren't used to seeing in those circumstances.
"I'd have taken "ALL DUMPS TO HOLDING DISK" to normally mean
just that, usually an indication that we didn't swap tapes or
for some reason it didn't mount correctly.

We are very confused this morning.
This report says "short write", usually I take that to
mean that we filled up the tape and we probably need to
perfrom a flush.

i don't know of a tool doing this with amanda-tapes,

Hello all.
I was asked if there was a tool, not necessarily graphical, but that will be
better, that can compare what is on a tape to the directory the information
on the tape comes from and notify the user of any missing files. Is there
anything like this around?
The aim is to find an efficien
