broad beam antennas to provide full coverage
over about 1/3rd of the earth’s surface.
Precise operational plans will be finalised over the coming months but
it is anticipated that only quite simple ground equipment will be
required to use this satellite.

Hi Burns,
yes - all Phase 3 satellites use Magnetorquers to control attitude
during perigee. They were pulsed by the IHU on-board computer which was
running a model of the physics and orbital dynamics to trigger the
correct coils at the right moment. This Timing was synchronized with
the Sun
Hi David,
Normally you would prevent this by mechanical design principle called Poka
Yoke.
Obviously this was not the case here.

Hi,
Since you brought up politics...all I know is that trying the same thing
over and over usually ensures getting the same results. I dont think we are
going to see an AO-10,13 or 40 again because of the propulsion issue. I
doubt any group is going to let a pyalod on with a motor

Hi Gordon,
such a fuse would not prevent a battery from an internal short-cut in
one or more cells... that's in fact what happened to AO-40.
Also you have to make such a failsafe feature really fail safe, so
that it does not hit you in the back if it fails..
These kind of things, like Watchdogs,

Hi Robert,
that's indeed the big question... We do not know in which attitude the
spacecraft is.. is it still spinning very slowly or tumbling? What is
the Solar-ß-Angel?
If the S/C has a good orientation to the sun and the battery opens, than
there should be enough power to operate the IHU
