I understand that you should not mismatch admin tool and server versions
but has anyone tried Admin 7.0 with 6.3 server ?

We've been running the 6.3p16 client against our 5.1.1 server with arguably better results than the 5.1.1 client (we've got a few managers who prefer the way search results are displayed). I was running the 7 client with good results as well.
Quite a while back I had to do some work on our 5

As I stated earlier, you should not use a downlevel user program (5.1.2 program with 6.3 server) this can cause major headaches. You can use an uplevel user program (6.3 program with 5.1.2 server) as long as the

I agree with this. Like I said, test, test, and test again. I would still expect calls that something does not work, but at least I would know the most common things do so that I can work on those items that are not. I

Totally agree on the Admin versions. We've both seen
how that can hose a person/application.
What I was saying on the UT/Server mismatch is that if you
have to choose to upgrade one first (which is not that uncommon with

I never recommend using a down-level user tool. I do recommend NOT using an administrator tool that is not the same level as what your server is (this can lead to interesting consequences.)
I also second your test it

I second James' recommendation - updating the UT first is a
better path. The basic rule is that when using an older UT, it will
*probably* function fine until you run into an API or function that is different

I recommend that you upgrade the User Tool to the latest/greatest version while keeping in mind that you may need to patch your server to prevent problems. You will not gain the 7.0 functionality that is included with

Just to followup myself with another question Let's say we decide to start upgrading User Tools *before* we start the server upgrade process. Would there be any issues using a 7.x User Tool against a 5.x Server?

Looking to upgrade a ARS 5.x server to ARS 7. It's possible that it might not be feasible to get all of the potentially connecting User Tools upgraded in a timely fashion. Will upgrading the server have any adverse effects on those clients still connecting with a
5.x User Tool?
