Not while testing you don't. Once you get it working with ULAW ONLY
then see if you can get it working with G729.

When you have no FW and no NAT, then you seem to be inside your local
network. In this case you shouldn't really care ?!?!

First, let me explain that I have only used x-lite to do a few quick
tests. I verified audio in both directions and dtmf to work ok. The
following are the settings I changed, with the exception of voicemail.conf

went away - I can hear audio now from X-lite.
I was using the debian unstable package.
Here's what I did:
cd /usr/src
mkdir asterisk

cvs
adding nat=yes to the sip definition made no difference.
Does Asterisk use the DSP in your sound card to do the
audio processing?

No, it doesn't need DSP to process audio. You can use your sound card as a
phone though.
