weakest link still holds, and as we all have high quality
equipment/cables the need for the source, the original mastering, to be
better is probably more important than most of the other things we spend
our time worrying about

No ram, it was not just one machine, but blades in a single rack. 704 or
some number close to that of RAM. Many many terabytes of disk all RAID,
etc. a Sun Fire
I use a database server (power6) with 1Tb main storage. ;)
Blades, as you say: A single OS (AIX) with about 10-15 virtual
(variable resources') hosts.
