Phil, Thanks for that. I might see if I can demo a DAC (with optical connection) at home. Am I right to think the X-DAC v3 uses a power supply, rather than an IEC? -- chobbney chobbney's Profile: http

+ against a fairly inexpensive Creek CDP (~£600?), and IMO, the SB+ was much better. What's an SB+? -- chobbney chobbney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9648 View this thread: http

of course, but I could put on a CD when I really want a quality sound. But that strikes me as an inconvenient workaround, not a solution. Buggeration. -- chobbney chobbney's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php

being let down. Still; I'm listening to the SB as I type this, and I really would find it a bind to have to faff around with CDs again. I'd also have to burn a load of stuff that I only have on the Slimserver PC. -- chobbney

the Squeezebox will never sound as musical as a good CD player and that electrical noise will always be an obstacle. I clearly need to sort out the power supply. However, I can't risk spending money on sorting out the Squeezebox and find it still fails to engage me. -- chobbney

the SB can be sorted. The difference was staggering, but at the moment it's a waste of money. I play only EAC-ripped FLAC, played at 100% volume. I've changed my audio to Smart Gain - although I'm not sure what benefit that is. -- chobbney

seem to affect the sound any anyway. That's interesting that noise would be less affecting if I used a DAC. I'll try to get someone to bring one round and see. I live in a house and the SB is connected via a cable to the SlimServer in the cellar. Thanks for your input. -- chobbney

If I buy from Richer Sounds I can't audition, but I save a lot of money. Unless I audition them elsewhere and fake a case of the runs to avoid buying them... *rubs chin* But your point about B*W is correct. It makes sense to keep to that brand. -- chobbney
