Yes, it is repeatable. However, get this: I reset the Xilinx (however
you spell that) chip (power on, hold down 1) and it got worse.

of iTunes I have used to compress files have worked ok
but I am now happier using flac and I think Slimserver works better with
it.

Maybe the solution, then, is to rip when wired and play music when not
wired.
Of course, this will change the path in iTunes and perhaps require a
library rebuild in slimserver.
