On paper and based on review, webfanboys etc, I was torn between the AVI
9.1 actives and Dynaudio Focus 110a. After careful consideration and
auditions, i went for the 110a's and have not looked back. Their sound
is richer and fuller and to be more expressive than the AVI 9.1s, which

To me, near field is a listening position closer than about, say, 1.5
meters from the driver(s). This is purely based on the fact that I

IMHO near field is when the speakers are closer to you than to to the
walls of the room so that you have the direct sound much louder tha

Ta very much to all of you for suggestions.
Basically shortlist will be PMC and Dynaudio - which is the same list I
had when I got the FB!'s.

My absolute favorite bookshelf speaker is the Thiel SCS4. That may be
too large for you as I am unsure of those requirements. At one time
they did have an active version but I have never heard them. ATC is
probably the nest sounding active speaker I have experience with. The

What he said. I bought some Sonus Faber speakers, because I thought they
looked good, nice furniture finish, lots of wood, etc. without approval.
I still had to sleep in the tub. Get approval first.

I'm looking to build an SB3 based system for my living room (so
aesthetics are a consideration, and I already have an SB3 connected to
my TAGMcLaren DAC and B&W 805's in my listening room, so this is not my
primary system).
The question I have is: Would I be better off (in terms of sound
quality)

Ciao Menno,
thanks for your findings... I've the exact same interest: little, not
too expensive, active speakers for my bathrooms... (or an auto on/off
T-class ampli?)
I'll give a look around and if I find anything more, I'll post here.

As no-one has given any advice, I thought I'd share what I've discovered
so far.
It is quite hard to find decent & small active speakers with automatic

The ones I found so far are

Can anyone recommend me some active speakers that have an auto power
on/off feature?
I am specifically looking for some to go in the bedroom with an SB3.
I have some active HHB Circle 5's for other use, which are great
monitors, but am looking for something smaller for the bedroom and want

I've just bought the Aego M active speakers, and these really do sound
very good - better than my Sony CMT-CP505 mini 'Hi-Fi'. So I'm now
considering replacing this 'Hi-Fi' with the Aego M system - after all,
I don't need the Sony's CD player (all my CDs will soon be ripped), or
its tuner (I can
If you don't mind buying used and you can wait for them to show up on
the used market, grab yourself a pair of Paradigm Active 20's or Active

very high quality levels.
Of course finding a pair might be tough but well worth it if
A friend of mine based in Italy who is quite an audiophile has a company

the reviews are good and I have a lot of faith in David.

Having them that close does have one advantage, you get excellent
coupling of the bass drivers and noticeable extra low-freq. punch.
I at least have my actives the width of an SB3 apart though.

FYI, I just got an ad from BSW for B-Stock M-Audio active speakers for
about 1/2 retail price.

I know nothing about the company or the speakers, but thought some of

SB3 (+linear) -> Big Ben
I bought a pair of Tapco S5's several months ago and overall, I'm happy
with them. Crisp and clear and can go quite loud. Not great with it's
limited low-end and sound stage but they're good value for money. Very
good connectivity.
