You might want to try making some comparisons between
AlienBBC/Softsqueeze on your PC vs. listening to the same stations
directly using WMP or Real or whatever you have. It may well be that
the poor quality is all you are going to get - your download bandwidth,
your ISP, and the BBCs upload are

except for Worldservice which is about 16kbps.
I think the BBC still wants to support Narrowband (dialup) users and

In terms of the BBC - I think the internet services were set up as a
replacement for SW and before DAB for users where FM was poor and only
received LW/MW.
As a side issues - the encodings of the Listen Again programs are
different to the live streams.
