[Aus-soaring] Rope break

2011-04-11 Thread Christopher Mc Donnell
A pilot (a Professor) was killed on the weekend at Blue Ridge Soaring Virginia USA. The FAA has stated that the tow rope broke and he landed in trees nearby. Having had very few aerotows I was wondering just how common rope breaks are locally. I have heard about 'aerotow upsets' but never a simpl

Chris, I have been towing for 35 years and, during this period, had one rope break. I suspect that the fatality wasn't caused by the failure of the rope but the execution of the emergency procedure. Regards Peter Carey _ From: aus-soaring-boun...@lists.internode.on.net [m

Hi; I have never had one myself but have been on the airfield during two breaks over the last couple of years. So they do happen. One of those rope breaks may have been the tug pilot pulling his release. It happened when a new student managed to the rope over his wing. A few months later we found

I can only recall two real rope breaks in 6000+ aerotows. Both on the ground: one before the heavy glider started moving, the other shortly after. It pays to be pro-active about cutting worn ends off the rope, removing extra knots, etc. Tug pilots can't do this on their own: the rope runner is in

One real one for me when I was a tow pilot (was actively towing from 1996 to about 2006). Training flight, glider got out of station, a bow developed in the tow rope, weak link broke as the rope pulled taut again. ___ Aus-soaring mailing list Aus-soari
