Yes, you are missing something. The IGC spec is actually a suggestion, not a requirement. In order to provide all the EW functionality, all 8 wires on the Ethernet RJ connector are used (yeah it isn't Ethernet either) and it is impossible to comply with the IGC wiring standard. Unfortunately

Those of using EWMicrorecorders should be very careful to NEVER plug a FLARM connector into the EW by mistake. The EW has built in reverse polarity protection but the FLARM cable by paralleling pins 1 and 2 and pins 7 and 8 on the connector defeats this. Take care! Damage by this method con
