I have acquired a copy of the book which Guida refers to below and I certainly
recomend it.
The book is a bilingual publication (Portuguese/English) and if you are looking
for history for its own sake, it is a very good read, and much easier to digest
than either Saudades or Guill

brick or stone mason? If he was self-employed, then no, he would have no
Social Security number. The U.S. government didn't give self-employed
people benefits until the mid-1950s.

find the death record for Alfred Viera 8 June 1945 84 Roebling St.
Brooklyn NY.
Living in NYC for 17 years. (I still can't find him on Ancestry for
the 1930 census) Only 2 years at above address. He was a retired
Mason.
