Last year when I visited St. Catherines Cemetery in Kealia, Kauai looking for
family I took pics of the headstones there!
When I read you were looking for someone from the Teixeira family I remembered
I had about 6 pics of headstones for them!
So if anyone is interested I can upload those pic

Pereira, parents of Manuel Pereira da Luz, born abt 1680 in Santo Amaro, who
married first to Luzia Silveira, in Santo Amaro, and second to Maria de Avila,

There was a family story that my g-grandfather was from a Rio de
Janeiro, and it was written on my g-grandmother's prayer book, along
with her birthplace (Ponta Garça - spelled Punta Gassa). It isn't
recorded in any articles or official documents. We never knew whether
it referred to a birth place

When I saw Rio Janeira on my grandparent's US marriage record for my
grandmother's place of birth I thought it might be Ribinheira(sp?)
somewhere in the Azores and my English grandfather who married her might
have misunderstood although he did speak Portuguese due to his travels.

Interesting thought! My US-based relatives may well have
misinterpreted the name they heard from my g-grandparents. Isn't there
is a Ribeirinha in Ribeira Grande? One baptism record I have mentions
Ribeira Grande as the birthplace of a gg-grandfather. I haven't looked
at those films at all, y
Ponta Garca is located in Sao Miguel, in the Municipal Council of Vila
Franca so Campo, the Church there is Nossa Senhora da Piedade.

Yes there is a Ribeirinha on Sao Miguel near Ribeira Grande. There is also a
Ribeirinha on the Island of Faial. I am very familiar with the one on Sao
Miguel and have transcribed all the marriages and many of the birth
records.

I usually find many records of children with unknown fathers and single
mothers. Some of these women could be prostitutes, but I've never found this
mentioned in the register.

Something tells me that ALL is not all 9 islands. For some reason, I don't

You know that you are on the Azores genealogy list and that the Azores are
a separate archipelago from Madeira, correct? Although we have a few
researchers here that do research Madeira, you will find most of the
Madeira researchers on the Madeira list.

My guess is that the male ancestor did not come from Rio de Janeiro. There
isn't one on Sao Miguel island. Since Ponta Garca has a phoentic spelling
to it on your source, someone took a guess at Rio de Janeiro and since that
is a famous city, that is what they thought they heard.

Whoops, did not refer back to the map.
Freguesias west to east: Sao Miguel Arcanjo in Vila Franca, Ribeira das
Tainhas, Ponta Garca, then Ribeira Quente and Furnas (they are kind of on
top of each other, adjacent to Ponta Garca on the east).
