Marcio, of course you are right, generally speaking. However, when one is
stumped, you have to look at other avenues. I often look at the baptisms of
the siblings of uncles and aunts to try and find clues to go back further.
In this case, you have as siblings of Antonio:

As far as I can tell.
I'd like some input on the word in front of "filhos". Is it a number or some
other qualifier?
Anyone?

We have a Barcellos who married into our family from Dos Palos area of CA.
She is the wife of a brother whose sister married into our family. I don't
know anymore about her as I have never researched her family.

Yes, Adrian, that is correct. Back in time, people took the dad's, the
mom's, a grandparent, or a godparent. There is an article on naming
traditions on the Azores Genweb, written by me and Kathy Cardoza. I'm
traveling at the moment and can't post the link, but maybe someone else
will. Cheri

Thanks for the reply JS Lopes, Cheri and Eric.
It seems that twice in my father's line men have taken mothers maiden names
over fathers last names. Through my research my paternal last name has
changed from Martins (currently) to Dias and now to De Barcellos.

Manuel da Costa Ponte and Maria de Medeiros were having children in 1698.
Nordestinho marriages start in 1700. I hardly doubt you will find a marriage in
1698 or prior when the records only start in 1700

I agree with JS Lopes. The Portuguese hall in Artesia, California has a
heavy concentration of people from Terceira. There are Barcelos families
there. However, I haven't seen the first name Filisberto in my research.
Maybe that's more unique.

"de Barcelos" is very common in Azores, mainly at Terceira. Alternative written
forms include Barcellos, Bracel(l)os, Barselos, Baracelos.

Hi Paul,
