JR,
I sent an attachment to your email address. Did you get it? Sometimes
the attachment slows transmission.
The Ponta Garça relatives are my ggrandmother's side of the family.
This couple is Francisco Jose da Ponte and Rosalina Maria, married
1795. If this is the right Rosalina (or Rosalia), pare
Thanks Cheri and Rosemarie,
It looks like a baptism date is also given (I see it as 22 March
1772), I assume for the bride, Rosalia de Jesus? Do you read it this
way? If so, it would be great because I would then have her birthdate.
She would have be 23 when she married, if I'm reading it right.

JR,
Yes! This is the family. Is this information from your own records? I
had not seen "Costa Carneiro" attached to Joaquim Costa before. I
think Carneiro or Carreiro was the surname of his wife, Maria Rita's,
father (Shirley Allegre found that for me).
I would love to see any other information
Cheri,
This is very plausible! The godparents listed in the baptism record
for Jose de Medeiros (Pingão), 1854, Ponta Garça, are Manuel de
Medeiros and wife Maria Jachintha, from Igreja Bom Jesus Menino,
Ribeira das Tainhas. José's parents (Jacintho de Medeiros and Anna
Jacintha) are listed as na

Interesting thought! My US-based relatives may well have
misinterpreted the name they heard from my g-grandparents. Isn't there
is a Ribeirinha in Ribeira Grande? One baptism record I have mentions
Ribeira Grande as the birthplace of a gg-grandfather. I haven't looked
at those films at all, y
There was a family story that my g-grandfather was from a Rio de
Janeiro, and it was written on my g-grandmother's prayer book, along
with her birthplace (Ponta Garça - spelled Punta Gassa). It isn't
recorded in any articles or official documents. We never knew whether
it referred to a birth place
We've seen some references to a Rio de Janeiro -- possibly near Ponta
Garça, São Miguel. This was listed as the birth place for my great
grandfather, though I believe I found his baptism record in Ponta
Garça. We also saw it listed as the place of origin (Rio de Janeiro,
São Miguel) on a list of pa
Thanks for providing this interesting background information. Where
would the slaves have been from? Were slaves more common on some
islands than others?

Thanks to everyone for sharing their insights and experience. I think
I need to learn more about how Reunion works. Reunion does assign
numbers, although I see they are of limited use. I was not familiar
with the Reunion discussion board and I appreciate learning about
that.

Tomas,
How did you establish proof of connection? Did you get Azorean baptism
and/or birth records certified in the Azores? Who would I contact to
do this?

Is there information on emigration from the Azores to Brazil in the
1860s era? I'm following up on a family story that some relatives from
São Miguel spent time in Rio de Janeiro. I think I saw on the listserv
that passport records from Ponta Delgada don't exist for those years,
but are there recor
