Here's the thing: The question is coming from I.T. at FTDNA. They are
developing new trees and using Gedcom format. He sent this about names:

I use the name a person was born with. In my genealogy program, it uses AKA
names and it has its own field to input it. You can also put quotes around a
name that is frequently used. As an example, my grandmother was Carolyn Rose
Goularte but she always went by Carrie. So, in Legacy (now
What I'm trying to get a feel for...do most people just basically put the
names together, or do they actually use the alternate name thingy in the
genealogy program? I'm asking because Gedcom has a the Name and then they
have the Alternate name. I have an idea that most of us just use the main

In my genealogy program I have an AKA field too. In almost all cases I use the

Marilyn, can you tell me how you would enter a Joao da Silva who goes by

Cher,I have done both 1 and 2 in case 1, but have also added in the notes the
information. I myself would do the same for those who were immigrants and
non-immigrants.

When entering a name into your genealogy program, how do you deal with
multiple names?
Case 1 (immigrant)
Say your ancestor is Joao da Silva, but the vast majority of records in
America call him John and your family called him John. What do you enter
into your genealogy program?
1) Joao da Silva
