Hi Caroline,
Fantastic!
I'm away from home with very limited internet access. I'll try to look at the
record when I get back.
Best of luck with your research,
:)

Hi Linda,
Thank you for the letting me know about the marriage index. I was able to
find the marriage record for Manuel's parents, Theotónio Ignácio Gomes & Luzia
da Conceição - exciting! :

Caroline,
Wonderful! As you are researching Terceira, you should download the Terceira
Marriage Index if you don't already have it. I'm having tech issues, so can't
provide a link, but it's here in the forum in two or three threads and a search
should bring it up.

Hi all,
Just an update on what I have found so far.
I had been focusing my newspaper search to the Santa Cruz County and
Stanislaus County areas, using Newspapers.com, Legacy.com and Archives.com
. Thank you Cheri for the link to the Portuguese papers archives.

Caroline, have you checked with the church in Watsonville for the marriage
record? The parish register may have the island of origin. My one grandfather
married in Mission San Jose and the register states he was from Faial.

Caroline and Celeste,
Celeste's last post just
hit me like a ton of bricks ***
California began their vital record registration of births and deaths
around the early 1900s. It took a few years for everyone to be in
compliance (all doctors, midwives, etc reporting the birth and deaths). So
early 19teens records are a crap shoot. Maybe you will get lucky or not.

Thank you, Celeste! I did find Manuel's draft card but he is listed as an
"non declarant alien" and I have not found any naturalization documents,
just in case. It looks he lived most of his time here in the USA in
Stanislaus County and then passed in San Joaquin County in 1942.

Hi Cheri,
Thank you for the link. I am on the hunt for any and all USA records for
sure.
I already received a response from Santa Cruz County for Frank's birth
certificate (allegedly born in Watsonville) and they are not able to find
it.
I did find a small notice of a Superior Court Tran
