The last log-entry in the rsync-log is 2007/12/20 08:07:13 [200] rsyncd version 2.6.8 starting, listening on port 873 - nothing after that. Even with installing the rsyncd with the option --verbose enabled there is nothing in the log. I will try to convince the firewall / AV-SW to be more verbose

Yep, that looks good.. I didn't read the part about you trying rsync manually before, it probably makes the ping alittle beside the point anyway but good to check I guess. The next thing I would do is look in the firewall logs for some evidence of what's going on. There must be something popping
