I have the same problem. It only happens (or I only realize it)
with newsgroups with lots of articles. I have set debug-on-quit t and
this is the stack (at this moment gnus has received and parsed all
messages and keeps on waiting almost forever)

environment, but they're not playing w
I seem to be seeing some extra BBDB frobnicating when using JWZ's
optimized gnus 4.1 setup. It appears tob e caused by the new nntp.el
package.
Any ideas?
