No, it's a setting. As an earlier poster said, BBEdit provides
an "expert preference" s

Try this: type "hello" into BBEdit's find window, switch to Safari and
search google for "goodbye", now switch back to BBEdit. You'll find that
your BBEdit find window now contains the word "goodbye".

Can't speak to the alleged bug, but...
I always use Search -> Use Selection For Find and Search -> Use
Selection For Replace (command +e & command + shift + e OMM, but I'm
not sure if that's the defaults)
