Or one could always use Robert Nelsons barefs and just replace the rootfs /
install what you want / need via apt-get install.

Keep in mind I am not all that familiar with Python, but have been
programming in multiple other languages since the 90's. Meaning, I dont
write code in Python, but can usually read through it ok.
Anyhow, according to that post this error is due to namespace resolution.

Hello. I'm trying to get PRUSS working with the new Debian beta image.
I've got things working on Angstrom, but not on Debian. I'm using
kernel 3.8.13-bone50, is anybody else using PRUSS on this kernel?

Yes. Did you enable the PRU ?
if you do the following: cat /sys/devices/bone_capemgr.9/slots
Does it show the PRU enabled?
If not, look in /lib/firmware for a dtbo that has the PRU , and do an:echo
PRUDTBOFILE /sys/devices/bone_capemgr.9/slots

with Capemgr. Then I enabled UART1 as well, and it stopped working, and I
can't get it working anymore.

If I remember right, to set p8_12:
SET r30.t14 // p8_12 set
and to clear:
CLR r30.t14 // p8_12
Nope, it's not namespacing. In python it's safe to just import serial
You know the problem is due the call function.
Instead using:
*except* ser.SerialTimeoutException:
use:
except serial.SerialTimeoutException:
print('Data could not be read')
except:
print 'Error', sys.exc_info()
