Okay, looks like xorg tried to set it up with what it wanted.. What

Yeah, it's probally the xorg driver:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
would show it complaining..

Whoops, yes missed that. On removal still no luck though. I also tried a
different resolution (1920x1080) but no difference.

on a BB-XM rev B.
I ran into issues with HDMI on kernel versions above 3.2:
