Dear Listers,
Just recently got back from some much needed rest and recreation time out at
the cottage and still catching up on my e-mails. Though I am not in any way
a breeder, I thought I would jump into this most interesting discussion, not
to stir trouble but rather to offer a "European" persp
I'm hoping that those of you who use a harness or a Halti when
walking their dogs could perhaps give me the benefit of their
experiences please.
At present, I *only* have 3 dogs, which I'm find awkward for walking
en masse. When there were 4, I could walk them 2 at a time, but now,
that means leav
Thank you so much for sharing that information. I have a question -- what
happens if someone violate the Breeders' Code of Ethics?

Hi,
I think Cecilia will give a good answer later. But I think the answer is
then you can not be a member of our Bernerclub (Swedish Sennenhundclub) any
more and the pups can not be registered in SKK - meaning you can not sell
your pups. All pure bred dogs in Sweden are registered in SKK and withou
My pleasure Mary-Ann : )
I had reason to call the information department at SKK earlier this year
with this and other questions.
Violations are first investigated and if fault or intent is found,
reprimanded with a warning, but the litter will be registered. Upon repeated
violation, the errant br
Cecilia,
Is there any way to find out how many breeders are breeding outside of the club? I
know in many European countries with strict club rules like this, the percentage of
breeders operating outside of the club seems quite high. Is there anyway to know?

I would not ever walk a dog on a Halti or Gentle Leader head halter at the same time

Hesse's spirit has left his body.
To all those who have followed us for the last year I extend my thanks.
He was a good boy and did not deserve what he was dealt.

I think this information is very, very interesting! It sounds like things
work as they do in Sweden because of an informed/educated public and a Code
of Ethics with some teeth behind it -- and the public disgrace aspect
probably helps as well. When this COE was developed and implemented, was

I have a 35 lb box of giant breed formula Abady (minus 3 cups) for anyone
who will send a call tag from UPS to ship to them. It cost me $65 from my
great dane breeder, but my pup was having problems with it and I've switched
to Canidae.
I hate to waste the Abady, so it's there for the taking.

Just a thought...in case you don't get any takers for
the food, I'm sure your local humane society/rescue
organization/animal shelter would love the donation!
Cheers!

Hi Margareta,
Your system seems to be working well for your area.
Does this mean you don't have shelters?
What about mix breeds?
We do have a big problem in the US with too many animals in shelters and a
large percentage purebreds. They also have to put a lot down, because they
shelters are full
Would that be unusual for a female bred when she was two years old, then
every year thereafter till she was 7 or 8? Isn't that "normal" when
breeding - to breed once a year? (You can tell I am not, and never will be,
a breeder).

Hi Sylvia and all,
We have one shelter in Stockholm and I think there are some others too in
the country. There are organisations trying to find a new home to dogs if
they cannot stay with the family or owner of some reasons.
I learned from you on the list some years ago the big problem with many d
This past weekend we drove up to Fredericton, New Brunswick for 4
beautiful, pristine, wonderful obedience trials... The club has
run-throughs on Friday night so you can go into the weekend feeling as
prepared as possible... So many enthusiastic thanks to River Valley

Hi Mary-Ann,
I concur with what Libby had to say, if the bitch is in good health and
maternal duties come easy to her then six litters would not be excessive.
For myself I have yet to breed more than three litters from any one bitch
that I have owned, two bitches were bred for a fourth time but in
Hi Donna,
I'm famous for my freckles:-) It hasn't stopped me finishing championships
on my dogs and those that folk have bought from me. My Oska (Ch.Tertzo's
Jester) has freckles, stamps them on his kids and along with that we've had
a nice record of sound hips and elbows from him. In the grand sch
Hi,
And another excellent point -- wouldn't it make sense to assess what a
bitch
is producing before breeding again?

Hi,
If an experienced breeder is working with a bitch from a good family
background with which she is familiar with then I see no problem in
