I agree that Win7 is a very very good platform for SBS. It is stable
and fast. *nix is great for running (non-IE) browsers (I have a small
HP wi-fi netbook running Chrome on Ubuntu 10 just to act as a GUI and
control surface for SBS).

I have exactly the same results in the web UI as Frank, FLAC files, Flac
tags only.
Obviously the scanner parses the separator correctly... but the UI just
randomly chooses one artist to display...

It really doesn't matter if 7.6 gets shelved. I've been running it
(happily) for over a year and will continue to run it. It makes NO
difference what its official release status is - it works. If LMS (or
7.x or 8.x) eventually replaces it great...if not, who cares?

I can't wait to find out what this is - I have NO scanner problems
(xp+win 7, sqlite, 1 hard disk, 40k tracks (1k mp3 full artwork, some
large), mip integration) with any version of 7.6 in the last few
months...
16 minutes for a full rescan.

Unless you have > 100,000 music files, your 400Mb memory usage is just
wrong... way too big.
I suggest you remove all plugins and restart to see how much memory is
in use, then re-add the plugins one by one...

periodic "progress" message to the server during
long-running operations such as the initial directory scan, musicip
import etc...
If the scanner crashes, presuambly the server detects the lack of
"progress messages"?
I'm intrigued to find out what is causing your scanner
Clear and Rescan writes to scanner.log. Everything else related to
scanning writes to server.log.
