I've just changed
"Filter genres at the album & track level" to be "Only show tracks or
albums matching a selected genred for the artist".
Now both the web gui and the player's displays do what I'd expect them
to, i.e. just show the Various Artist's album tagged with the genre
I've selected.

I have just upgraded to todays nightly and now when I select A Genre >
Various Artists every single album in my library tagged as Various
Artists (ie. Compilation=1) is returned. This happens for every Genre I
select that includes at least one album tagged as Various Artists.

I haven't checked to see what SS is currently doing, but my interpretation of
the "Filter genres at the album & track level" settings are:
"Only show tracks or albums matching the selected genre for an artist" is
self-explanatory. Will only show the tracks that match, not all songs on an
album
So I just tested this. When you click Genres -> -> All Albums,
you always see only the albums within that genre. The listing under
All Albums is the same regardless of the preference setting.
If you click Genres -> -> Various Artists, you also always see
the same result regardless of the sett

you click "Various Artists" it is showing "all tracks for an artist"
and when you click "All Albums" it is showing "all albums".

Well, I maintain that it's a bug. Please remember that we're still
talking about browsing by genre. If you choose the setting "Show any
tracks and albums for an artist", and then you browse by genre, the
resulting list of albums should include the union of (a) albums in that
genre, and (b) albums
Just got around to looking at this bug. Do you guys agree this is a
valid bug? I don't think so: if you turn off filtering, you shouldn't
expect it to filter.

I think I need to put together a test sub-library to check this issue.
In the past, every 6 months or so, I've enabled VA, rescanned, not
liked the results, and turned VA off again.
What sort of stuff would you suggest I throw into a test library to
highlight these issues?

What you're describing sounds different -- or at least a special case --
of what I'm seeing. The two albums are clearly in different directories,
so SC should recognize them as different. Interleaving them is
definitely not right.
But when you turn on VA, are you getting all your VA albums when y
I've been plagued by this too. It's kept me from using the VA feature.
An example:
Two different albums:
\\slim_minuet\Media\Music\j_Post-Romantic\Massenet, J\Piano Works -
Aldo Ciccolini - D1.flac
and
\\slim_minuet\Media\Music\n_Modern_French\Satie, E\Piano Works - Aldo
Ciccolini - D1.fla
I'm running the Dec 7th nightly of SC7, and if I browse Genres, and then
select Various Artists, I get *all* VA albums, not just the ones with
tracks for that Genre. I'm pretty sure I've seen this happen on earlier
