Our 2nd annual Christmas Bird Count for Smooth Rock Falls was held on
Saturday, January 4, 2020. We had 4 parties in the field, and 3 feeder
watchers. The weather was cloudy but calm, the high temperature a
comfortable -9 C.
Our species list was 20 on count day, plus 2 count week species, which
I normally do not report most owls but this reliable one is safely on
private property (also it is not breeding season...) and I know that *the
homeowners do not welcome trespassers* but *it is easily viewed from the
well plowed shoulder of highway 11*. Do not remain at the side of the
highway too
On Saturday, August 17, 2019, a party of eight birded at the Moonbeam
sewage lagoons. A total of 25 species were observed, mostly ducks, which
provided an interesting study since many ducks are in eclipse this time of
year. Highlights among the ducks were one Wood Duck and one Bufflehead.

On January 5, 2019, we completed the first ever Smooth Rock Falls
Christmas Bird Count. While there were no unexpected bird sightings, and a
few species were missed, I think we accomplished a solid count that showed
a good representation of what birds are around here in the winter.

This first winter bird is *best viewed today from the sidewalk at 185 Ross
Road looking across the street.* It is under the feeder and cedar trees in
front of 186 Ross with a mixed flock of White-crowned, White-throated,
Lapland Longspur, etc. To approach the house at 186 will flush all the
birds.
Sorry, I accidentally hit send too soon...
When Angie got home, we could not re-find the bird in the 5:00 hour but we
will keep vigilant.
Visitors are welcome, but phone ahead at 905 870 8584 so neighbours are not
worried. I will re-post if the bird seems to be sticking around.

Today at 2:00 P. m. in mixed precipitation, I had a first winter Harris's
Sp[arrow at my feeders. It had a tan sides of face with a dark cap, white
belly with a distinct necklace. It was just a little stockier than the
White-crowned Sparrows feeding around it and there were surprisingly no
fights,
We arrived at Garringer and Wilson roads about 9:30 and birded the area
for over an hour with no luck on Jun 9. Went on to Ft. Erie to view the
Brown Pelican from Bowen park and it was flying around and landed on the
green buoy. Went back to try again for the Chat, as previous directions
