We saw a Northern Shrike on March Valley Road in Ottawa this afternoon. It in
the trees east of Klondike on the south side of March Valley Road. It hovered
several times over the field; a picture is shown at the link. Exactly a year
ago today we saw a Northern Shrike on the dike at Shirley's
Today at noon we saw a large flock (perhaps 200) of Bohemian Waxwings on the
road just west of the big barn on the Central Experimental Farm.
Unfortunately, they did not all disperse as cars went by and about 10 had
already been killed when we arrived. I asked the Experimental Farm
I returned with my camera to the Central Experimental Farm and the Bohemian
Waxwings were still there. Earlier today I reported that several had been
killed by cars as the large flock had landed on the road. I could not stop
earlier but when I returned I discovered that they were drinking
Over the past hour we saw many thousands of Canada Geese flying south along the
Rideau River near Merrickville.

My wife Beth spotted a juvenile Northern Goshawk west of Ottawa on November 1
afternoon. I got a picture that is harshly backlit and the bird was partially
obscured by branches...see link below. We returned to the same area yesterday
but did not see it again. On both occasions there were
Three experts have concluded that the juvenile Northern Goshawk I reported
earlier today was a juvenile Cooper's Hawk. Thanks to Tom Carrolan, Jean Iron

We saw a Great Black-backed Gull on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa this afternoon.
Pictures are shown at the link below. At Petrie Island, we saw the Snow
Buntings reported previously and two Merlins chasing and being chased by crows.

We saw two Rough-legged Hawks west of Ottawa this afternoon along March Valley
Road. One of the Rough-legged Hawks was harassed several times by a Cooper's
Hawk. One of the birds appeared to be a Juvenile dark morph as shown in the
photograph at this link:

My wife Beth spotted a Northern Parula and a Nashville Warbler at Fletcher
Gardens in Ottawa yesterday afternoon. They were in flowering trees in the
ravine beside the Fletcher building. A photo of the N Parula is posted at

I saw an adult Golden Eagle near the Rideau River south of Kemptville this
afternoon about 2pm. It was fairly low initially but soon caught a thermal and

I saw my first Song Sparrow of the year west of Ottawa yesterday afternoon.

On Tuesday March 16 we saw two small flocks of Bohemian Waxwings that were
taking short flights from tree tops to catch large flying insects. At first we
thought they were taking courtship flights but inspection of photos later

We saw a Peregrine Falcon perched near the top of a very high microwave tower
on Carlington hill in Ottawa late yesterday. It was very large and appears to
be an adult female (see last 2 pictures at link below).
