Martin Mallet, Sara Calhim and I did a very quick late afternoon and
evening run to Amherst today, hoping to run into the Hoary Redpoll and
get me a 2009 Boreal Owl as I've been playing owl tag with them since
New Year's. We were successful at finding Boreal - 1 individual along
the south edge of
Early this afternoon, Tuesday, January 20th one Boreal Owl was seen deep in
a heavily wooded area of the Amherst Island Owl Woods. It was very
secluded, tucked up against the trunk of the tree and surrounded by many

Spent the morning birding the Owl Woods on Amherst Island starting at 8:00am.
Our first run through yielded only 1 Northern Saw-whet Owl, 7 Long-eared Owls
and 3 Short-eared owls hunting over the open fields. On the second run we found
an additional 3 Northern Saw-whet Owls and few
Today I left Mississauga bright and early to try for the Boreal Owl
reported yesterday by Bruce Ripley at Amherst Island. Unfortunately, despite
much searching by a number of birders, the Boreal was not found. If the Owl
is relocated I hope it is reported as I would have no hesitation in trying
