got a live 1.4 headset which is usb. and using a microsoft lx 3000 usb
headset.
i set it up and it works.
but when i do a test call for skype.
got the microphone volume up to 70 %, but it still sounds real soft.
the mike, is on top of the headset.

You could try Recuva, a free utility that attempts to recover lost files.
