Perhaps I've missed it, but, if not, the first thing you need to do is tell
us what program you use to listen to your cds: winamp, windows media player.
Which operating system you use, or which speech program, could be helpful
too.

I have found that defragging using the Windows defrag tool that sometimes it
won't defrag all the files for whatever reason. Try defragging in a 2 to 4
weeks & see what happens at that time.

Do you have a cleaning program like CCleaner or something like it, running
at start-up that could be deleting your shortcuts?
On comboboxes, I use the keystrokes Alt + down arrow to open & Alt + up
arrow to close them.
