well the square stick is a good idea but you will have to glue a stop on the

Hello Tom. I just spent about an hour and a half at Lowes playing around
with the dowels and plastic pipes.
Here's what I found
saying many half round sizes are available.

I see what you mean about needing the nut on the inside, and thus the
flattening of the dowel. There are so many ways to construct this device.
You could appoxy the nut to the outside of the PVC tube and then not worry
about flattening the dowel. You could cut a slot in the PVC, then have a

Hi Tom. Sounds like you have a lot of people interested in your clever
measuring device. I have a question. Don't they sell half round that would
fit into the pipe? If so, you could cut two, one inch pieces off and glue
the toggle down to lock or
raise it to unlock the measure. All parts are available from Lee Valley.

I wonder if one could get a chunk of square extruded tubing and a rod that'd
fit it. This might allow one to tap the bolt into the outside square piece

Or, use a cam where the rod exits the tube and then you can just twist the
rod and lock it in place, no set screw required. Just like an adjustable
ski or trekking pole.

You've got some good ideas here.
The reason for the flat side of the dowel is to allow a nut to fit between
the dowel and the pvc.
The small bolt I use for a set screw goes through a hold in the pvc, and
threads into the nut.
When I keep tightening the bolt, it threads through the nut and clamps
