On Saturday, I trudged around Sugar Hill State Forest just west of
Watkins Glen. As my hike was about to end around noon, a Broad-winged
Hawk flew to a roadside snag close to where I'd parked, and despite my
initial worry that it would flush as soon as I emerged from the trees,
it sat on that

Nice raptor migration observation yesterday from Adam Troyer in Candor. Thanks
for sharing Dave!
I scanned the sky from Comfort Rd in Danby from 10:35-11:15 yesterday and only
saw 19 Broad-wingeds – winds were stronger south (~10 mph) than forecasted.
Later in the afternoon I noticed a
I talked to Reuben again today. He said that yesterday’s Broad-winged Hawk
migration path shifted eastward during the day. Reuben also heard from another

Reuben Stoltzfus was cutting hay on his farm in Ovid today, where he has a

Yesterday (28 April) Reuben Stoltzfus was traveling north on NYS-414 between
Ovid and Romulus when he saw several kettles of small Buteos who circled
tightly and flapped rapidly. They totaled about 200 birds. This was before the
rainstorm.

I heard and saw a Broad-winged Hawk this morning in apparent possession of the
traditional Maple Ave territory. Quite a few other Broad-wings were passing
over West Danby, right through the midday. Then at about 2:30 there was some
kind of aggressive interaction at treetop level involving three
We had him yesterday down in Spencer. I've really enjoyed seeing the dark
morph; it's been awhile but he was hanging around before the weather really
got bad.

On Monday afternoon I came across a Broad-winged Hawk on Station Road (West

Yes, Derby Hill has seen very few Broad-wings yet, unless they got a pulse
today. But my guy is definitely back, even swooping into the woods overlooking
Maple Ave, where the nests from previous years are located. He's in the

I believe my local Broad-winged Hawk has returned today. For several hours it

While we were finishing dinner in our glass-roofed conservatory, I saw a
