Give book 2 and 3 a shot - "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass" -
they move into far darker and more complex territory than what was
covered in the first. They're stronger than "Compass" in my opinion,
although "Spyglass" has some chapters which require a couple of passes
to gather ever
Okay, I completely agree with you about the sequels. And for a
turnabout, I didn't especially like The Golden Compass. It was okay,
but it seemed like any of a hundred other fantasy books I've read.

Actually, Ender's Game is one of the very few Sci-Fi stories listed in
"Outstanding Books for the College Bound" which is filled with
classics of great literature like Mellville, Dickens, Joyce,
Hemmingway, et al.
That is what I thought, but was thrown a bit when our (East) Indian born
programmer said he was only familiar with the "gray" spelling. I would have
assumed that India would have leaned toward the British form rather than the
American.

Yes, hopefully this case will at least allow a better protocol to be
devised. Incidentally, the surgery to remove the tube was utterly
unnecessary and in my opinion mean-spirited. If you aren't going to
feed her, just don't use the tube. Why cause additional pain?
