what an excellent point. Free as in freedom, too. I think that in many
ways this discussion does boil down to the open source question --
total cost of ownership vs empowerment and spending in the local
community rather than sending our money to some distant mololithic

Have you looked at other LMS? There are other options too. If you're into
opensource, moodle and sakai are probably the ones to look into, since having a
large userbase in the OSS world is important. However, if you are looking to
save money, I'd be ultra realistic about the real costs involved.

All of this talk about "blackboard" reminds me ..
Does anyone know of a little whiteboard app that can be integrated into a
browser? Say, a few people show up on a web site and one wants to draw a
picture the rest can see in real/semi-real time. I know there are other
things, like IM programs

We don't have anybody to do PHP or mySQL in IT, at least not for a major
production system, we have some people that have played with it, but nobody
that we could devote to something like that.
MySQL Enterprise with 24x7 support costs more than we pay for our Clustered

::nod:: ok. Wonder why they went WebCT here. So you have 9 helpdesk
guys in all IT then. Makes sense. We're running it out of distance

Yes, I do, we pay around $140k a year for the enterprise version of the
full academic suite based on around 30k FTE. But the software isn't the
most expensive part.
10 servers, SAN Storage, Backup Tapes, Network equipment, Disaster
