The current firmware doesn't. I picked up this lovely animated film, persepolis and had the .srt Subtitle files. It didn't play on the PS3, but with a plugin it did play on Windows Media Player. So I had to re-encode the video with the subtitles embedded using virtual dub to watch it on the PS3.

I usually don't care much, but this firmware - the major addition of which is full "BD Live" (interactive, online Blu-Ray) support - seems like it slipped in a nice boost to the media player. It still doesn't play everything (mostly older stuff seems to bomb) but with this update the PS3 plays a h
