The current firmware doesn't.

I picked up this lovely animated film, persepolis and had the .srt
Subtitle files. It didn't play on the PS3, but with a plugin it did
play on Windows Media Player.

So I had to re-encode the video with the subtitles embedded using
virtual dub to watch it on the PS3.

There's a whole world of really good foreign films out there that this
would open up :)

I need to post a different thread on Persepolis as well come to think
of it, it was really really good.
