Maybe - but now that I've fixed it it works... so I probably won't fix it. ;^)
It's not a bad machine really - just old. It's slower than a new one, but fast
enough (dual PIII 1000's are still pretty fast for a server, even a virtual
server host).

Bad ram can make all sorta of strange things
happen, from hardware failure, to strange
hard disk errors and whatnot.
You did pull /everything/ out before trying the

Is the machine an eMachine? I had similar problems as well. At first I
thought it was the motherboard so I replaced it.
Low and behold it was the power supply! (learned that lesson quickly)
