Gordian Knot will probably do what you need, but you could also try
dvdshrink.

That's what I was about to say, there's no codec involved here. DIVX should compress that down a lot.

I'm as much a neophyte at this as you, but are you sure that the AVI has the
mpeg4 compression applied? It sounds like you ripped the video to an
uncompressed video codec.
