Does Homesite/CF Studio come with a VTML Builder/Wizard? I could have
sworn I saw screenshots somewhere.
Am I going bonkers?

these are perfect work arounds.
Even with MSSQL server, output of char fields needs to be trimmed,
especially when doing comparisons.
