As far as the slim jim thing goes...as some of you may know, I am a cop. I was unlocking a lady's car door for her one afternoon. She started the car to warm it up, and accidently locked the keys in it as it was running. After I unlocked her door with the slimjim she was thrilled of course.

You can buy either an auto trans shield, or a blanket. The blankets are cheaper, but hold in a lot of heat. The trans shield is a PIA sometimes, but would/should contain an explosion for you. at least from coming thru the floor. Look in your Summit or Jegs catalog, or online at www.jegs.com I

IMO this whole bellhousing issue really depends on how you drive the car. If it is street-driven only, then you are probably not beating on it so hard that things will fall apart. However, if you do beat on it (whether street or track), then you need to protect yourself.

I just rebuilt the (69) 396 in my 67. 10 years ago I rebuilt it with a .040 overbore, COMP 268 cam, headers, Edelbrock/Holley, Accel ignition and retained the 10.25:1 compression ratio. I drove it for 50K/60K miles on regular (87 octane), unleaded gas. I got 12-14 mpg in town and around 16
