are right Steve, and good advise is to check everything you have outlined!! But,
keep one thing in mind, the wire that is getting HOT and is frayed, is the
RESISTOR wire in the RUN circuit for point ignition cars!! Your problem may be
in this wire ( to great a voltage drop (resistance),

correct for your car!
