Gig fiber questions

2000-09-28 Thread Ben Hockenhull
Folks, A few days ago, someone mentioned that there might be an issue when you try to connect cisco and noncisco switches together via GBIC. Can anyone verify this, and give some details? I'm expecting to connect some HP ProCurve switches and Catalysts together via gig over fiber real soon now,

I guess one thing to remember is that Multimode uses a LED as a light source and Singlemode uses a Laser. Since the laser provides a more focused and coherent pulse of light it can travel through fibre over longer distances. The multimode cable also has a larger core and does not require as high

Andrew, I will suggest you to read page 87-91 of second chapter of a book (computer Networks By Andrew S. Tanenbaum) However you can diff. it by 1-you know light signal in fiber propagate in terms of total internal reflection of light. In fiber , different rays will be bouncing at diff angles ,eac

Ben, Not sure about the Cisco to HP compatability issue, But you are pretty correct on the Mode-Conditioning fiber. They offset the singlemode fiber from the center of the multimode fiber to transmit the signal. Remember you will need a mode-conditioning fiber patch cord on each end. Also you ne
